This was a great weekend for me-- my last hard training weekend before the 100-miler in 3 weeks! The plan was to try back-to-back 50k's and see how I felt on the second day. The result: I was tired, and had to focus harder than usual on making sure I took in enough calories at the aid stations, but overall I felt good. Wendell told me to focus on the downhills, and I did-- it was a great race for downhills since there was ~5000 ft of down, and none of it too steep (of course this meant 5000 ft of up too). The trail was beautiful and remote (3 hour drive up the California coast on a twisty but beautiful highway 1), so there weren't as many runners as usual at PCTR events. The small field, combined with my focus on the downhills, enabled me to finish first overall! Definitely the first and probably the last time this will ever happen for me in a mixed race again. But I'm glad I got the chance, once in my life, to cross the finish line first.
