What a fantastic weekend in the desert! This was our 2nd 100-miler,
and it was exactly the opposite experience from my first one 7 weeks ago.
Everything was organized perfectly, and I never had to worry if an aid
station would be out of food, unmanned, or missing altogether. It was so
much fun to have food, heat, & people cheering at the finish, and to feel
so pampered.
Some of the things which made me SUPER-HAPPY:
coffee AND hot water (for us tea-drinkers) at the start
the heated tent (with chairs!) at the finish
Don Lundell's foot-care kit: didn't need it for my feet, but it was a
real life-saver anyhow. I used it to tape my sunglasses back
together after they broke during mile ONE of this shadeless
desert race.
the tall thin guy with silvering hair at the Coyote Camp aid station who
yelled out "incoming athlete" whenever anybody appeared on the
horizon in either direction (at my plodding pace late in the
race, I didn't feel much like an athlete, but it was SO SO SO
encouraging to hear him call that out).
the mini Snickers bars
flush toilets, running water, and SOAP every 15 miles!
Paula being super-cheerful the whole night long!
the volunteers' Halloween costumes
I saw a real snake and several shooting stars :)
the efficiency with which the volunteers refilled my camelback!
being able to camp at the start, and fall right back into my sleeping
bag again at the finish!
showers not far away (although I never figured out how to get hot
water)
the moon!
