Twice up and down Mt. Diablo (3849 ft)! The first loop was fantastic: shady at the bottom, and a nice cool breeze near the top. We finished the first loop feeling great in just over 3 hours. But by then the day had heated up considerably, and the second loop was quite toasty. Our second loop was more than half an hour slower than our first loop. But still, we enjoyed the beautiful views, and we were very glad to make it to the top of Mt. Diablo the right way (last year we had driven almost all the way to the top). Mt. Diablo is similar to Mt. Washington (in NH) and Whiteface (in the Adks in NY) in that there is a road to the top, and an observation tower, plumbing, gift shop, etc. So there are a lot of tourists in their pristine white clothes wondering what in the world these sweaty, dusty, dirty, sunburnt folks with the race numbers are doing on their clean mountain. But we enjoyed the look on one woman's face when she asked if we had biked up, and we replied "No, we ran up -- TWICE!" It was a great day overall, and our time was good enough for first place woman again (out of a small number of women). So we got another first place finisher's bag for Daniel as well, since he plays the crucial role of pacer & moral supporter.
